Not Impressive

The early supporters of Senator Noynoy Aquino — that would be those who were swept off their feet by the torrent of yellowness and nothing more — sure know how to put up a show.

Following the airing of part 1 of GMA7’s Isang Tanong Presidential Forum, his rabid supporters immediately flooded cyberspace with praises for their idol Senator Noynoy Aquino. Their statements vary slightly but in essence they all say the same thing and that is:

I was so impressed with Noynoy.

I don’t know about you but I find this really strange. If you watched the forum with an objective mind I seriously doubt you’d find anything impressive about the performance of Noynoy or any of the other participants for that matter. The fact is most of their answers weren’t really substantial at all. Of course, there were some exceptions but none of them from Noynoy.

Before any of you pro-Noynoys get all indignant consider first the questions asked of him. (loosely translated from the vernaclar)

From Mel Tiangco: What have you accomplished?

From Malou Mangahas: What three things do you plan to accomplish?

Viewer-submitted question: If elected to the presidency would you be willing to give up your position should you be implicated in allegations of corruption?

Efren Peñaflorida: How can one be a hero?

Analyzing the questions with an objective mind, one should easily see that these questions are hardly insightful. As I said in the preceeding post, they were mostly “motherhood” questions that demand nothing more than motherhood statements. Of course, Mel Tiangco’s question is in a class of its own. It was so basic a question it shouldn’t have been asked at all especially since Noynoy’s much-vaunted “accomplishments” are already public knowledge. Seriously, someone should have given Ms. Tiangco a better question to ask.

So how did Noynoy answer these questions anyway? See for yourself.

This comment posted on another blog should give you an idea of the general sentiment of objective viewers.

what I see is mediocrity, lack of confidence (as seen in his bearing), lack of focus (as seen in his shifting eye focus), seeming lack of conviction, and incoherence. I had to replay the video thrice before i could get heads or tails of what he talking about… he’s the type of person that I will not hire based on the initial interview alone…

My observations as well. I also noticed, as many others also have, that Noynoy talked really fast. Was it a conscious effort on his part to appear fast as opposed to  slow? Or did he just have another appointment to attend to?

Come on pro-Noynoys, can’t you just be real for once? Noynoy was not at all impressive in that forum. Not by a long shot. And what’s with the false air of objectivity some widely known Noynoy fanatics are trying hard to project with comments similar to this one:

For me Gibo, Perlas and Noy did very well. I’m impressed.

Who are you kidding? If you were really objective you wouldn’t include Noynoy in that list. Compared to how former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and environmentalist Nick Perlas carried themselves and responded to the questions, Noynoy’s performance was nowhere near as good. MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando and even Councilor JC de los Reyes provided better (not necessarily popular or palatable) answers.

Can’t we just all be honest about it? I don’t like Noynoy because he has nothing to offer than a fairy tale and has made no real effort to prove otherwise. The rabid Noynoy supporter, on the other hand, likes Noynoy exactly for that reason. Stop pretending that you like him because of his “impressive” qualities because the simple fact of the matter is he has not displayed any up to now. Hopefully, he will be able to in part 2 of the forum.

But wait, there seems to be a slight problem. Rumor has it that the Senator will not be appearing in the 2nd part to be aired next Sunday. Apparently, the source of this piece of disappointing news is shock-jock Mo Twister. Here’s the relevant excerpt from his blogpost.

And here is a bit on information you might not know.  This is a two-part show, last night and then the other half to be aired this Sunday.  The next episode was supposed to have a twist where we will see the presidentiables ask questions to each other, but guess who isn’t going to be there?  Noynoy.  Apparently, right after the taping of the first show, he stood up and said he had to leave for some official reason.  The other half of the program (next week’s episode) wasn’t finished–shoot, it didn’t even start.  So unfortunately, this pivotal episode will not have the guy most of us came to see.  Rumor has it that because Noynoy wasn’t answering very well, it was decided by his people, that it would be best if he did not take part in the 2nd half.  What answer Senator Aquino gave to GMA on why he was leaving, I don’t know at this point.  However, what could be more important? I would understand if it were a medical emergency, but is there anything else more important at that time than finishing this program? Wasn’t he aware when they scheduled the show taping that day, that you should be prepared to finish your obligation to the show and not just that, to the public who are so eager to see you and hear your views?  Is the rumor true that he ran away because he was struggling? What do you guys think?

Well, if Noynoy’s camp is to be believed the reason for his departure has something to do with the Election rules. Here’s an excerpt of the “official” explanation (boldface highlights are mine):

Senators Aquino and Roxas will be filing their certificates of candidacy on November 28, and the decision to do so was made as early as the first week of November.

According to the Omnibus Election Code, and in light of the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of Penera vs. Commission of Elections, after the certificate of candidacy has been filed (Nov 28 in the case of Senators Aquino and Roxas), candidates may not participate in election-related events until February 9, 2010, for those vying for national positions

Section 80 of the Omnibus Election Code prohibits any person from engaging in election campaign and partisan political activity outside the campaign period. Under 79 of the OEC, election campaign and partisan political activity refers to any act designed to promote the election or defeat of a particular candidate to a public office, which includes:

“Holding political caucuses, conferences, meetings, rallies, parades, or other similar assemblies, for the purpose of soliciting votes and/or undertaking any campaign or propaganda for or against a candidate;

This provision of law has been expanded by the Supreme Court in the recent case of Penera vs. Comelec, G. R. No. 181613, September 11, 2009, where the Court ruled that “the conduct of a motorcade is a form of election campaign or partisan political activity, falling squarely within the ambit of Section 79(b)(2) of the Omnibus Election Code, on “[h]olding political caucuses, conferences, meetings, rallies, parades, or other similar assemblies, for the purpose of soliciting votes and/or undertaking any campaign or propaganda for or against a candidate.”

If a mere motorcade as in the case of Penera was considered a form of premature campaigning, then appearing on a televised program such as “Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot” where known presidentiables are invited to answer policy questions that may touch on their respective platform of governments, will be certainly be considered as engaging in an act designed to promote one’s candidacy.

Based on the advice of his legal team, Senator Aquino  declined to participate in the second half of “Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot,” which will be aired the day after he files for candidacy, on November 29.

Hmm. This is really funny. Really, really funny. After subjecting the public to heavy bombardment of his “mythical” TV ad, Noynoy now suddenly turns into a shy boy. Ayayay. What’s so special about November 28 anyway that Noynoy can’t just move the date for the filing of his COC? And what about that legal advice? If Noynoy’s camp was really so concerned about the airing date of the forum’s 2nd part then shouldn’t it be concerned also about possible re-runs of the 1st part after November 28? Ayayay again.

Well, what do you know. There’s a big reason why Noynoy can’t move the date of his COC filing and here it is:

Editor’s Postscript:

Some have been asking, why not just move the date? Good question. Here’s the answer:

(1) The Nov 28 filing date was chosen and confirmed before the invitation to join Isang Tanong Isang Sagot reached the Senator’s desk.

(2) It was also chosen, on a more personal note, because it is the day after Ninoy’s birthday. (You might ask, why not Ninoy’s birthday itself? Well, because there are a lot of events to celebrate Ninoy Day and Sen Aquino wanted to celebrate it freely with the people, without legal constraints).

(3) Also traditionally, major political parties choose separate dates to file, so it can be “their day” with their supporters, and no confusion. That gives only 2 days for an invariably more number of presidentiables to file AFTER “Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot.”

Celebrate Ninoy’s birthday freely with the people? Why? Let me guess. Media Mileage.

Noynoy is really missing out on an opportunity to show the people what he is made of. Part 2 of the forum would have given him a chance to showcase his awesomeness against the other candidates, all of whom are nothing compared to him at least according to his most rabid supporters. But instead of taking up the challenge he retreats?!?

This is not impressive. Not impressive at all.

@leistat, provincial sojuorn of Mar and Noy as you called it, during Ondoy and until after 27 of November won’t be considered violation because they’re not yet officially considered as candidates, whereas on the 29th of Nov. airing of the 2nd part of Isang Tanong, they will already be candidates because they will be filing their CoCs on Nov. 28. the reason noynoy cannot make it to the second part of presidential forum @ gma 7, was because he taught it was ISANG TANONG WALANG SAGOT..that’s why he didnt said anything..I think not participating in the second part was a good move for him to spare himself from too much humiliation…the president main job is the protect his country nd his people..pag nanalo si noynoy sya ang poprotectahan nang tao…what will happen to our country then?…I’m sure his baby sister nd boy abunda will take care of everything…gud luck philippines!!!

Nonoy talked so fast i could hardly understand what he’s saying especialy on the answer to Mel Tiangco’s question. I have to watch the video twice to understand what he’s saying. Also he needs to improve his over-all bearing. Wala talaga syang dating na pang Presidente. He still has time to inform the people about what he really intends to do for the Philippines to improve the economy and lives of the people.

We don’t need impressive speakers for President, we need a President who can be a catalyst of CHANGE, who can bring back DECENCY to our government, who can serve as a beacon light of HOPE and INSPIRATION and who can be the RALLYING POINT to bring back people’s TRUST and FAITH in the Government. There we will be able to move forward for the BETTER under Noynoy Aquino Presidency. We don’t need SOBRANG TALINO at GALING, SOBRANG SIPAG at TIYAGA, SOBRANG MAKAERAP. Tama na sa amin ang MAKATAO AT MAKADIYOS at walang bahid ng Katiwalian.

    engr. jojo,

first of all i want to correct you on your understanding that this post is all about “impressive speaking.” sorry to disappoint you but it is not. it is clearly about the blind allegiance you and other noynoy supporters have for the senator. can you tell me honestly that noynoy was impressive in that forum? as in really?

i hate to tell you also but “makatao at makadiyos” are not enough. in the first place noynoy is not “makadiyos at makatao.” you just imagine that he is. perhaps you think noynoy’s being softspoken and meek are indicators of his being “makatao at makadiyos.”

you know what will happen if noynoy wins and he turns out to be lacking in “talino at galing” and “sipag at tiyaga”? while we cannot really predict the future, i think it’s safe to say that noynoy will just end up a puppet to be manipulated by opportunists especially those within his inner circle. are you in his inner circle?

lastly i would like to remind you that to vote wisely is to use the brain. you are only proving to everyone that noynoy supporters are all about feel-good, fuzzy ideas of decency, hope, inspiration, trust, faith and all that crap. you certainly will not vote wisely. kawawa naman ang maraming pilipino.

In student debates, you will note that the debaters would talk fast so that they can bring out all their arguments without exceeding the time limit..

In Noynoy’s case, he didn’t even use up all the time alloted to him, yet he is speaking fast as if he is beaming with ideas..

Surely, someone coached him to project as if he is like his father Ninoy who is eloquent and has many things to say.. They didn’t coach him well enough though on what to say..

Noynoy Aquino is the most popular presidential candidate at the moment. Most people take this as an excuse to forego any ‘debate’ on the basis of issues and platforms. Why? Because Noynoy embodies the traditional reality that elections are not won on the basis of platforms and issues.

HOWEVER, I am not necessarily anti-Noynoy. what I am against is how voters seem to think that their role in a democracy ends after they’ve decided on who to vote for.

I beg to differ to that traditional thinking.

I believe that our real role as voters BEGINS when we have chosen our candidate. And for those who have chosen Noynoy, the task of DEMANDING results from him begins. The FIRST STEP in ensuring that Noynoy delivers results is to ensure that he presents us with his PLAN – a plan that answers these questions:

How exactly does he plan to govern us?

How does he envision the Philippines in 2016 as compared to the Philippines of 2010?

What are the specific PLANNED outcomes that we might expect to see after the second Aquino administration?

How does he PLAN to deliver said outcomes?

These are questions we have so far failed to ask Noynoy in a PUBLIC FORUM. We need to raise the bar that represents the way we engage our politicians. We need to ask questions that cannot be answered by mere platitudes and motherhood statements.

As with any real democracy, power resides with the people. But then the NATURE of said power also depends on the NATURE of the way people choose to wield said power.

    engr. jojo,

Explain to us exactly how, since your candidate won’t, he is going to accomplish being a catalyst for change, inspire hope, bring back decency, blah blah blah blah. Yeah, all well and good — we rather expect him (or any other candidate) to do all those things, those are prerequisites. Telling us he’s going to do all that doesn’t mean a damned thing — we want to know HOW. What’s the plan? Does he even have one?

And in light of the SC’s recent ruling, there is no legal impediment real or imagined for him not to participate in part 2 of the forum. If he does not, he is demonstrating that he actually doesn’t give a hoot for public service or keeping his constituency (you know, the people who are ultimately responsible for his paycheck) informed.

    @balatucan,

Are you serious? Philippines will never be a better country because of poeple with the same mindset as you.

The point why noynoy should prove himself to people through television debates is because HE IS THE MOST LIKELY TO BE PRESIDENT(God-forbid) BASED ON YOUR “POPULARITY SURVEYS”.

Apart from being a member of an elite family, WE ALL KNOW that he has NEVER performed well in senate, congress and LIFE in GENERAL. That is why we filipinos should “nitpik” him so he can prove himself why he is WORTHY of the highest post.

Just because he is leading POPULARITY WISE, does not mean he has to stop proving himself worthy (“Abanse na ako, bahala na kayo dyan.. woohooo”). Please remember that the IT DOES NOT STOP AFTER WINNING THE ELECTION. The real ISSUES and CHALLENGES are AFTER THE ELECTION. And noynoy has NOT PROVEN he is capable and even dedicated to face those challenges. As of now it seems that he is only there to win.

I really was hopeful that there is still a light behind the tunnel on this increasing level of “idiocracy” in the Philippines. But because of what you said:

“Let the cellar dwellers, talk and talk and talk and impress us with their showmanship nothing will ever change the voters minds.”

I’m losing hope for this country. tsk tsk.

I am running a business and am looking at a potential candidate to run my business while I look into the other details of my business like marketing, advertising and development of my products.

If the Presidentiable candidates are job applicants applying for the top position in my company, hands down and no question about it, I’ll choose Bayani Fernando. Why?…because he has shown himself as one who is sincere, capable, visionary, has the real feel of the people’s needs, has heartfelt integrity and who knows what he is doing. He’s one type of leader that this country badly needs. I believe that all those wise and well informed voters out there are one with me on this. Does Nonoy have the credentials to be the CEO of a major company? Has he actually led an organization? The answer is a clear NO! So the discussion on his platform is IRRELEVANT because the guy just cannot hack it. Unless of course you are talking about PS3…

We watched it on TV. Sobrang disappointing nga talaga.

As of now, sila Gordon at Fernando na lang yata ang “lesser evil” sa mga pagpipilian. Sayang si Nicanor Perlas, maganda pa naman yung ideas nya. Eduardo Villanueva and Gilbert Teodoro are quite ok – to some extent… Joseph Estrada, not again. Manuel Villar, no. Just no.

As for Noynoy, I think he is just reaping the benefits of a political opportunity – the death of his mother. Before Corazon Aquino died, there was no substantial attention given to Noynoy – to the extent that he is not even a “choice”. Sure, may magagandang ideas din siguro sya but I highly doubt his character. He is so vulnerable to manipulation. And I highly doubt his capabilities to improve the condition of life in the Philippines. Tama yung isang nagcomment sa taas eh, yung living conditions nga ng mga trabahador nila sa Hacienda Luisita eh hindi nya naayos. Paano pa kapag buong bansa? When we first visited the workers in Hacienda Luisita, nalaman namin na 9 pesos lang ang kinikita ng mga tao dun for the whole week. Tapos dahil sa media attention na dala ng Hacienda Luisita Massacre napilitang itaas yun — naging 12 pesos per week na. Even if they are poor, I think yung 12 pesos per week na bayad ay hindi makatao. Pakitang-tao, sure oo naman!; pero makatao, not even close.

Maswerte lang si Noynoy. Nagkataon lang na ginagawa syang “lucky charm” ng mga walang alam, mga tanga, at mga di-masyadong nag-iisip para sa dadating na election.
