Erap Estrada and Noynoy Aquino chicken out!
I like watching debates between Presidential candidates more than reading their campaign propaganda or write ups about their latest activities in newspapers which actually be crafted by public relations professionals and advertising gurus in cooperation with members of the “friendly” press.
You get to see how well the candidates themselves answer questions in real time. You don’t see them through the wall of hype created by their political ads.
Anyway, let me just re-post in full the announcement for the Carlos P. Romulo Foundation for Peace and Development debate organized in cooperation with ANC and the Asian Institute of Management.
Presidential Policy Debate Kicks Off
Thursday, January 14 at AIM
The Carlos P. Romulo Foundation for Peace and Development is pleased to announce that the first comprehensive debate on domestic and foreign policy among presidential candidates in the May elections will take place on Thursday, January 14 at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
Sen. Richard Gordon, Sen. Manuel Villar and former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro will participate in the two-hour forum. Two other candidates – former President Joseph Estrada and Sen. Benigno Aquino III – were invited to join the discussion as early as October last year, but they declined.
Organized by the Romulo Foundation in cooperation with ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) and AIM, the forum will focus on the broad theme of “Philippine Credibility and Competitiveness in the World”, and seek policy responses from the candidates on five main issues:
1.The Maguindanao massacre and the wider challenge of peace in the Philippine South – If elected President, what policies and programs will the candidate pursue to stop the problem of private armies, resolve the conflict in Mindanao and Sulu, and bring stability and development to the region?
2. Philippine foreign relations and international security – What significance does the candidate attach to Philippine relations with the world, what countries and regions are the most important, and should the nation be involved or not in the international struggle against terrorism?
3. Philippine economy and international economic relations – What policies will the candidate adopt to strengthen and grow the national economy, expand foreign trade and investments, and what importance does he attach to key economic organizations such as WTO, IMF, WB and APEC?
4. Migrant workers – What policies will the candidate adopt with respect to Filipino labor migration, the welfare of OFWs, Philippine relations with labor-receiving countries, and international conventions for the protection and rights of migrant workers?
5. Philippine competitiveness in the world – What specific policies and programs will the candidate adopt to reverse the erosion of Philippine international competitiveness in the world and address the problem of corruption?
“The primary purpose of the forum is to elicit from each candidate his specific policy ideas and solutions to major problems and challenges of national life today,” says Ambassador Roberto R. Romulo, Chairman of the CPR Foundation. “In this way, the forum will assist voters in reaching a decision on who to vote for.”
The forum will be moderated by Ricky Carandang of ANC. A question panel composed of Ambassador Rodolfo Severino, head of ASEAN Studies Center, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Philippine Star Editor/Columnist Amy Pamintuan, and CNN correspondent Jaime Floro Cruz will take turns in directing questions to the candidates.
Under the rules approved by the representatives of the candidates and the sponsoring organizations, the panel will question the candidates on the five main issues during the first hour of the forum. Each candidate will be given two minutes to state his position on each issue.
In the second segment, there will be an open forum participated in by both the question panel and the audience. Questions will be directed by them to the candidates individually.
In the final segment, the three candidates will each deliver a three-minute closing statement to sum up their policy positions and make their appeal to Filipino voters.
Organizers of the forum said the event will be attended by the business and diplomatic communities, the media and the general public. At least 20 ambassadors are expected to attend. Because of limited seats, interested parties are enjoined to reserve their seats early. Registration can be made via email: reyes@pfgc.ph or telephone 885-0921
The forum will be broadcast live by ANC on cable TV and ABS Studio 23 on terrestrial TV. “This will enable the Filipino citizenry all over the country to watch the event,” says Ambassador Romulo.

Just a question, Pinoy Buzz? Aren’t you a gordon henchman? What are you doing in a Gibo blog? The fact that you have banded together to gang up on a single candidate shows that you see each other’s bosses as non-contenders in the election. I pity you, Farol. You’re supporting a candidate who has absolutely no hope of winning. It must be so frustrating. No wonder you’re commiserating with the gibo people. You’re in the same boat.
You and your friends can churn out all the negative propaganda you can on Noynoy. Honestly, I don’t see why Noynoyans as you call them even bother with you. I don’t know why I bother with you. You’re just a pain in the neck but that’s all you are. No matter what you do the yellow movement is just too big. Its ideology too big for your peabrain to grasp.
Lastly, if you think that your hardwork is making large enough ripples in the grand scheme of things, you have a bloated sense of your importance. You provide great entertainment— like a worm who thinks he can take on a lion, and by lion I don’t mean Noynoy. I mean the entire movement that supports him.

Thanks for this information. I, too, have been a fan of debates way back when I am still studying. I would even debate myself for some reasons, and sometimes my alter ego wins.
It is really funny in its literal sense that the two candidates, Noynoy and Erap, declined this invitation.
Looking at it, probably they have figured out that whether they attend or not this “comprehensive debate,” it will just add doubts on their names.
And so they refused the invitation..
Because less talk is less mistake.
[Reply]
Ax,
No thanks necessary.
I do hope the organizers of this debate make sure that it lives up to its claim.
I hope to see Villar answering tough questions head-on and doesn’t resort to side-stepping or deflection tactics.
I want to hear more about Gordon’s idea about asking for a debt moratorium. It’s really one of those unimaginable things you hear off. Just before I resigned, he was talking about building something like a Panama canal in Zamboanga’s Pangil bay.
I want to hear more from Gibo too. His performance during ANC’s Harapan was surprising.
Anyway, I do hope ANC has the whole thing transcribed this time because it’s really easy to miss things that are said verbally.

Maybe Noynoy decided not to join the debate because the questions are very specific. He’ll have a hard time giving answers that begin with “ang sabi ng nanay ko”. It’s also harder for him to bash Gloria with these questions, except for the first question about Maguindanao. His trademark litany about evil and corruption is also harder to work in. Walang matitira sa limitadong spiels niya.

It will truly be an embarrassing event if Noynoy refuse to join the debate. Estrada can be excuse because he is considered a “Nuisance Candidate”. Estrada is considered unqualified and unfit to be president. But, I just cannot believe Noynoy hides under her sister’s skirt by refusing to attend the debate. Maybe, Kris can be a proxy for him. This signifies he does not have what it takes to lead the country. A true leader must face any animosity or any challenges that lies ahead. Nevertheless, that’s ok, he looks stupid as he look on TV anyway. I hope Noynoy’s supporters should wake up and realize what kind of candidate they are supporting? Imagine, an unqualified president is running the country? Just like an untrained pilot is flying a commercial plane without taking any flying lessons. Would you board that plane?

To defend yourself and your ideologies in a debate is one of the best way of showing to the voting public that you are indeed the president they need.
Dito mawawala ang hocus-pocus ng advertisment at slogans.
This is a good venue for Noynoy to show na hindi lang ang yumao nyang parents ang kaya niyang ibida sa publiko. The debate is good venue to show that he is not abnoy gaya ng bintang sa kanya ng mga kalaban niya.
If he believes in his ability, then he should join this debate.

I think that Noynoy supporter in twitter (bluevill) is confused. Alberto Romulo is the one who supports Noynoy, not Roberto Romulo who is organizing this debate. Victor,
We happen to think that debates are important because it’ll help the people make a better decision as they will have a better idea about who the candidate is, what his capabilities are, and what his plans for the country are.
Debates are actually more like simulation exercises, where the candidates are asked to answer to issues which they may face when they are elected. How they perform in debates is indicative of how they will perform in office.
It is one of the many tests that allow voters to scrutinize the candidate.
Would you rather that we elect a President just based on his popularity and political ads? That’s what happened with Joseph Ejercito Estrada back in 1998 and we should have learned out lesson.
Are you saying we should make Noynoy another Erap?

Or in technical explanation,
debate forums are one of the many ways to prove themselves (candidates for presidency) if they are worth it to the people of the Philippines.
There is no doubt that the people will decide for the country’s future. I won’t argue on that.
But to say without hesitation that Noynoy will be the next president is way too much early. It is not even campaign period yet.

The fact is Noynoy is one of the most sought after politicians.. while the others clamor for coverage, Noynoy has to reject it.
I don’t think you guys ganging up on Basilio is fair at all.. you accuse them of acting like jackasses… but guys, look at you… you’re all acting the same way.

You’re supporting a candidate who has absolutely no hope of winning. It must be so frustrating. No wonder you’re commiserating with the gibo people. You’re in the same boat.”
And then he goes:
“Lastly, if you think that your hardwork is making large enough ripples in the grand scheme of things, you have a bloated sense of your importance. You provide great entertainment— like a worm who thinks he can take on a lion, and by lion I don’t mean Noynoy. I mean the entire movement that supports him.”
Sorry if the word jackass grates at to your gentle and sensitive nature, but I was just calling a jackass a jackass and it would only be offensive if that person didn’t wanted to admit he was a jackass or he is ashamed of being a jackass.
If you want a good discussion, I am all for it.
If you want to tell me that it’s rather bad to say that Noynoy chickened out, I would have admitted that saying so might have offended his supporters.
Yes, it’s a childish ploy but so is hiding behind your parent’s names and accomplishments when you’re a grown man.

Pagka hindi makapunta si Noynoy sa debate dahil takot na takot siya na malamn ng madla na he is infit and stupid to be president, maybe he can send his sister Kris na lang to debate fo him. LOL.
Is this the kind of president that our country needs. E puro stupid din pala yung mga supporters nya. eka nga puro Noynoy’s party is a party of “TRAPOS”.

My wife and I are a first time voter. We were backing up Noynoy 100% as his supporter. We even traveled to go to his rally; however, when I saw his performance in the debate at DLSU, it made us think who this guy really is?and when we learned that he refused to join the debate on January 14, he just lost our vote! If you saw that debate or even listen to it, Noynoy sounded that he was a rookie, afraid, unsure of himself or an amateur performer. The other candidates sounded presidentiables, but not him. My wife and I are not stupid to vote for this guy. It may seem the unpopular candidate Dick Gordon has a more clearer vision of being the president. I believe if he wins, he can transform this country into a First World status. Gordon is the candidate that I will vote for.

Hahaha! Condemning Noynoy because he failed to attend one forum? Has he not attended several others?
Poor Paul Farol and BP, hahanap at hahanap ng rason para siraan si Sen. Noy.
Sino ngayon ang narrow-minded?
Yeah it must really suck when your candidate’s languishing at the bottom.
Ang bababaw niyong lahat!!!

Mark,
we’re not condemning noynoy. we’re just doing what we can to encourage or force him to provide more information about his plans for this country. dapat nga kayong mga pro-noynoy ang gumagawa nun. are you just all too mesmerized by his yellowness kaya nakalimutan na ninyo na malaking responsibilidad ang panguluhan?
can you please re-read your comment. that’s a good example for you of “kababawan.”

Ano ba??? Lumalabas kayong bunch of clueless spoiled brats. Na malamang ay tutoo naman. Hoy, gumising kayo. Hindi bibilin ng mga matatalinong botante ang mga gimik ng Kris-and-Boy show. Sumali ka sa mga debate. Magkaliwanagan kung may alam ka.

NOYNOY’s ANGST
Nasaan ang iba? FVR asked everyone. At a time when the world wants to hear what the presidential aspirants have to say about wanting to lead this nation, Noynoy and a former president are conspicuously absent. Questions abound why they didn’t and their non-participation speaks volumes.
For a candidate concerned about his ratings in surveys and in apparent condemnation for an outgoing administration, he’ll refuse to take the oath of President from the appointed Chief Justice if elected. Assuming he’s elected. If all of that is what’s in the mind of Benigno Aquino III, we wonder what kind of a leader he’ll make.
Sorry to say – right now, Noynoy is NOT his father, nor the indomitable spirit we expected him to inherit from his great mom. Asking someone who’s reluctant to be president of the nation is too much even if we insist the time is now. Why? He’s not prepared. I can understand the clamor for social change as Cory envisioned, which reached a crescendo upon her demise, but we must be realistic as to whom we want to be the next leader for these trying times. The Presidency is not a joke; it’s outright bloody.
Greatness and exemplary leadership cannot be achieved overnight but by experience, hard work, understanding the nation’s ills and putting into gear the best needed solutions. Words and conviction of those who think he can, do not make the man; it takes action. A good track record also helps.
Let us relieve the burden we entrust upon Noynoy. He’ll make a good president, say in 6 to 12 years and I agree wholeheartedly. It takes time.
In choosing our next president, I’ll leave it you mga kababayans. We know a few of them are good, strong and responsible enough to get us out of the rut we’re in. Let’s vote wisely. Let’s stop the culture of negativism every time we cast our ballots; if naysayers honestly believe that candidate can’t win. Let’s forget the comebacking one, he had his chance. Thank you.
