How Much Is Your Support Worth?

How much is your attention and possible support worth? Apparently, Senator Manny Villar’s camp pegs it at about P4,000 to P4,900. How do I know that? Check out this screenshot of Mr. Villar’s Akala Mo website.

As you can plainly see the senator’s camp has stepped up its efforts at getting more people to log in to his campaign website. This raffle for a cellphone is clearly meant to gather more people involved in its propagation. Based on prices posted at Sulit.com, this particular unit costs around P4,000 to P4,900.

Call me a nitpicker but I seriously think there’s something wrong here. I know the campaign season hasn’t officially started yet and I think the Comelec has also said that campaign rules are not yet in effect. Still, I can’t help but think that this raffle is bad news and probably a sign of things to come from the good senator.

My question remains. How much is your support worth?

101% VILLAR FOR PRESIDENT !!! Is not because of the prize above or the prize on their promo…

    to eral,

    to veneranda,

I heard from somewhere that there’s nothing wrong with wooing one’s target voters. Well, I think that’s not entirely right. Maybe it’s legal here, so no technicalities. But ethically, it’s on really shaky ground. The very reason why accepting gratuities in some companies and even in government is discouraged (I don’t know if this is the case here) is that it can become an inroad for corruption. We Filipinos especially as most vulnerable because our concept of utang-na-loob can be taken advantage of. How else do we think those who received cellphones and houses from Villar will reciprocate? By giving Villar their vote. (Sure some pundit will say “How sure are you that they’ll vote for Villar?” But I’m not one to assume that the recipients of “blessings” are ungrateful weasels.)

it’s just really wrong that it’s all “pera-pera”, isn’t it? would have been better if elections are fought and won over issues, character, and platform. i’m getting depressed over this.

That’s right – bleeding red and very angry. Yet, I’m still capable of thinking.
Rage – that level of anger that incapacitates one’s self-restraint and reasoning – is always entertaining, but hardly ever advisable.
